Obituary for Shirley Ann Karwat

Shirley Ann Karwat,
Vassar, Michigan.

Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Monday, December 12, 2022 at Covenant HealthCare Cooper. Age 77 years. Daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine (Slancik) Rakowski, Shirley was born October 7, 1945 in Saginaw, Michigan. She was a 1963 graduate of Saginaw High School and later attended Delta College and received her Registered Nursing Degree. On November 14, 1964, she married John D. Karwat Sr., her loving husband of 58 years. He survives her. Shirley spent her entire life providing care for others becoming a Registered Nurse and putting her talents to use at St. Mary’s Hospital, Vlassic Pickle Co. and General Motors retiring in 2010. Shirley enjoyed cooking, playing cards, sewing, spending time with her family and especially watching her grandchildren at their sporting events.

Surviving besides her husband John are six sons, John and Darby Jo Karwat II , Auburn; Kevin and Larinda Karwat, Frankenmuth; Matt and Marci Karwat, Frankenmuth; Phillip and Kristin Karwat, Saginaw; Joel and Dorrie Karwat, Frankenmuth; Mark Karwat, Frankenmuth; 13 grandchildren, John Karwat III and his wife Kelcy, Kaylee Karwat, Madisyn Karwat, Luke Karwat, Matthew Crawford and his wife Kylie, Hannah Karwat, Brooklin Karwat, Brayden Karwat, Laken Karwat, Lance Karwat, Christien Karwat, Charlotte Karwat ; two great-granddaughters, Kinsley and Charley Karwat; one sister and two brothers, Judy Godi, Saginaw; Gary and Kathy Rakowski, Midland; Joe and Kristy Rakowski, Arizona; many nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her brothers, Paul, Don and John Check.

Funeral Service will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 16, 2022 at the Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd. (between Shattuck and McCarty). Rev. Henry Pahlkotter will officiate. Honoring Mrs. Karwat’s wishes cremation will follow. Friends may visit at the funeral home, where the family will be present on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the family.
