Obituary for Robert Leo Schaefer

Robert Leo Schaefer,
Saginaw Twp., Michigan

Beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away Friday, March 22, 2024 at Covenant HealthCare Harrison. Age 99 years. Son of the late John and Pauline (Williams) Schaefer, Robert was born June 18, 1924 in Portland, Michigan. He served proudly in the U.S. Army Air Force and a member of the American Legion Post #439. Robert married Mary Jeanne Talbot, his loving wife of 67 years, on May 7, 1949. She predeceased him March 27, 2017. Robert was employed at Associates Financial Corporation from 1954 to 1974 and a Regional Business Representative for Citizens Bank from 1974 to 1989. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing poker, golfing and bowling.

Surviving to cherish his memory are three sons and one daughter, Steven G. (Beth) Schaefer, Silver Spring, Maryland; Linda K. (Michael) Kruscke, Commerce Twp.; Richard J. (Joyce) Schaefer, Prescott, Arizona; David R. (Diana) Schaefer, Rapid City; nine grandchildren, Max, Jack, Abigail, Jessica (Matt), Marshall (Destiny), Calvin (Lindsey), Cole, Cameron (Kayla) and David (Mikaela); eight, great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosie Goodwin, Howell; Geraldine Semishko, Holland; several nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by four sisters, Kathleen Thompson, Margaret Jean Hitdlebaugh, Mary Ann Montague and Aileen Rocky.

Funeral Liturgy will take place 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 5376 State St., Saginaw. Rev. Fr. Steven Gavit will officiate. Military Services will be conducted by American Legion Post #439 after Mass. Honoring Mr. Schaefer’s wishes, cremation will follow. Private entombment of cremains will take place in St. Andrew Mausoleum. Friends may visit at the church,, where the family will be present on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the American Legion Post #439 or St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
