Loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at Hoyt Nursing and Rehab Centre. Age 103 years. Daughter of the late Joseph and Antionette (Michalak) (Cherry) Wisniewski, Loretta was born March 7, 1920 in Carrollton, Michigan. She was married to Eugene J. Smokoski, her loving husband of 73 years, on November 5, 1949. He predeceased her October 19, 2023. Loretta was a salesclerk at Muir Drug Store, J.C. Penny and Morley Brothers. She was a member of St. John Paul II Parish, St. Josaphat Catholic Church, former member of its’ Altar Society and current member of League of Catholic Women. She was also a former member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Holy Rosary Catholic Church and SS. Simon and Jude Catholic Church.

Surviving to cherish her memory are two daughters and one son, Julianne (Paul) Ruocco, Newfield, New York; Laurie Jean Grzesiak, Saginaw; John (Kim) Smokoski, Lansing; her grandchildren, Gregory (Dia) Ruocco, Daniel (Jennifer Shea) Grzesiak, Andrew (Melissa) Grzesiak, Bethany (Bryan) Oxender, Ian Smokoski and Dylan Smokoski; two step-grandchildren, Paul (Tina) Ruocco and Holly (Jim) Gee; her great-grandchildren, Isadora, Teddy, Averie, Caden, Myla and Elyse; step-great-grandchildren, Nolan and Michael; two sisters, Elaine Kennelly and Marilyn Gilginas ; one brother, Ed Cherry; many nieces and nephews. Loretta was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Stephen Grzesiak; sisters, Helen (Ralph) Keeler, Dorothy (Ray) Zabelski, Delphine (Bill) Houghton and Jeanne Thon; brothers, Chester (Betty) Cherry, Victor (Elda) Cherry and Paul Wisniewski; two brothers-in-law, Ray Gilginas and Bob Kennelly; and special family friend, Wayne Himes.

A Mother strengthens us with her Prayers, encourages us with her Hope and blesses us with her unending Love. Mom, you are forever Lovingly in our Hearts.

Funeral Liturgy will take place 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2024 at St. John Paul II Parish, St. Josaphat Catholic Church, 469 Shattuck Rd., Saginaw, Michigan. Rev. Fr. William Rutkowski will officiate with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may visit at the Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd. (between Shattuck and McCarty), where the family will be present on Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass. A Vigil Service will take place at 6:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. John Paul II Parish or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
