Obituary for Leo J. "Smokey" Boyd
Leo J. “Smokey” Boyd,
Bay City, Michigan,
Formerly of Saginaw.
Beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully Thursday, August 4, 2022. Age 91 years. Son of the late Leo and Mary (Nalevayko) Boyd, Leo was born March 29, 1931 in Saginaw, Michigan. Smokey married the love of his life, Betty J. Meyer in 1951 and he did not want to carry on without her. Betty passed peacefully on July 26, 2022 and they are now joined together forever. Smokey was a proud Michigan State Spartan, who was a member of the 1952 National Championship Football Team. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. Smokey was best known as a coach and teacher at SS. Peter and Paul High School and Nouvel Catholic Central. In those roles, he had an opportunity to impact numerous lives. As a coach, he was a recognized with multiple Hall of Fame inductions and awards. Leo was a devoted Catholic and past member of Linwood St. Anne Parish. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving to cherish his memory are two sons, Christopher and Ginny Boyd and Michael and Margo Boyd; five grandchildren, Travis and Liz Boyd, Trisha and Derek Daniels, Trent Boyd, Alexandria and Jared Tew, Taylor and Eric Peace; eight great-grandchildren, Audrey and Eric Boyd, Finnigan and Rory Daniels, Murphy, Boyd and Hayes Tew, Chase Peace; two brothers, Jerry Boyd, Pat and Judy Boyd; his sister, Jackie Leppek; his brother-in-law, James and Jan Meyer; sister-in-law, Marilyn Boyd; many nieces and nephews. Smokey was preceded in death by his brother, Tom Boyd; brothers-in-law, Don Leppek and Ed Meyer; and sister-in-law, Gladys and Bill Kubik. The Boyd family wishes to give great thanks for the loving and compassionate care Smokey received from all of the staff at New Hope Bay and Compassus Hospice Team.
Funeral Liturgy will take place Saturday, September 17, 2022 at St. Dominic Parish, SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 4735 W. Michigan, Saginaw, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Peter Gaspeny will officiate. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Boyd Scholarship Fund at the St. Gerard Society (stgerardsociety.org) or charity of your choice.
