Katharina (Katy) Szunko

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Thursday, June 3, 2021 at her home. Age 93 years. The daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Wolfling) Beck, Katy was born April 22, 1928 in Apatin, Hungary and came to the United States in the early 1950’s. She married Aleks Szunko on October 4, 1952, in Saginaw, Michigan. He predeceased her in 1994. Katy was employed as a seamstress in the Saginaw area for many years. She worked as a seamstress for Robert Hall’s, Edward’s Men’s Shop and State Street Cleaners as well as serving many family and friends privately over the years. Katy volunteered at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital along with knitting hats and booties for Covenant Neo-Natal Unit and lap blankets for the veteran’s organization. Katy was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Katy enjoyed walking year round, sometimes more than five miles a day. Katy was a member of several bridge clubs and remained an active bridge player. Katy always took a special pride in the academic and athletic achievements of all her grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons and their spouses, Ozzie and Vicki Szunko, Saginaw; Wally and Jennifer Szunko, Traverse City; Robin and B.J. Szunko, Palm Harbor, Florida; grandchildren, Brittany Szunko and her fiancee Amy Zuccarell, Kaihla Szunko and her spouse Shanna Krysalka, Aleksa Szunko, Cole Szunko, Stephanie and Dion Bernaugh and Joe and Ashley Piel; three great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Bernaugh, Dylan Bernaugh and Sage Piel. Katy was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Szunko.

Honoring Katy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2021 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 5376 State Street in Saginaw. Rev. Fr. Randy Kelly will officiate. Friends may visit at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church where the family will be present on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to a charity of their choice.
