Obituary for James Norman Lehman

James Norman Lehman

James (Jim) Norman Lehman passed away at his home on Saturday, October 15, 2022, after a long illness following surgery.

Born Dec. 6. 1937, to Alex Lehman and Helen Rasmussen, Jim grew up in the Detroit and Saginaw, MI area.

Jim married his high School sweetheart, Marlene Francis Moser, on Sept. 6, 1958, and they had six children: Michelle T, Peter J, James N. Jr. (deceased), James A, Shannon A, and Shanelle M. Over the course of their lives together, Jim and Marlene also cared for countless foster children.

Jim studied Civil Engineering at Michigan Technological University. He returned to Saginaw and worked for the Saginaw County Road Commission for 25+ years, ultimately becoming the County’s Engineer Manager until his retirement in 2006. One of the highlights of his life was when Saginaw County dedicated the bridge over the Tittabawassee River on Tittabawassee Rd. to Jim in recognition of his service and exceptional dedication to bridge design.

A true outdoorsman, Jim loved bird and deer hunting, but his true passion was fishing, which he shared with all of his children and grandchildren. Many a-day were lost to Jim on a lake or river, where he completely lost track of time and space.

Other lifelong occupations of Jim were golf and photography. Having grown up with traditional film photography and developing processes, he was skeptical, yet appreciative of the advantages that digital photography offered, and truly enjoyed the convenience of being able to capture special moments of loved ones with his cell phone.

The twinkle in Jim’s eye, his mischievous grin, and the hop in his step will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife Marlene; five of his children; Michelle (Thomas) Lehman-Hayes, Peter (Esteban) Lehman, James (Cathleen) Lehman, Shannon (Scott) Nunn, Shanelle Teske; his 10 grandchildren, Alex, Maranatha, and Matthew Hayes, Benjamin and Andrew Lehman, Connor, Marlena, William, and Charlotte Nunn, Michael Teske; his great-grandchild Jackson Hayes, and his sister Mary (Michael) Kenney.

Keeping with Jim’s wishes, he will be cremated, and his ashes will be spread by the family in a private ceremony at a later date.
