Obituary for Gertrude "Jean" Spyker

Gertrude “Jean” Spyker,
Saginaw, Michigan.

Loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 25, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. Age 71 years. Daughter of the late Bernard and Mary (LaDrigue) Shinkel, Gertrude was born February 12, 1952 in Saginaw, Michigan. Jean was the beloved wife of Edward Spyker for 30 years and a devoted mother. Jean was a kind, caring, and compassionate person who always put others before herself. She had a warm and welcoming personality that drew people to her and had may cherished friends. Jean was a true caregiver and nurturer, who dedicated her life to God, her family, and friends. She was devoted to St. John Paul II Parish and attended adoration each week.

Surviving besides her husband Edward are two sons and two daughter, Paul (Shannon) and Jamie, Todd (Serena), Julie (Matt), Michelle ; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Eryn, Morgan, Lukas, Hannah, Devin and Rylee; four great-grandchildren, Bridget, Brylee, Blake and Barrett; one brother and two sisters, Bernie (Peggy) Shinkel, Sandy (Roger) Shaver, Maureen Collver; many nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by a brother, Doug Shinkel and a sister, Diane Peters.

Honoring Mrs. Spyker’s wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral Liturgy will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at St. John Paul II Parish-St. Josaphat Catholic Church, 469 Shattuck Rd., Saginaw. Rev. Fr. William Rutkowski will officiate with entombment in Chapel Hill Mausoleum. Friends may visit at the church where the family will be present on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass. Jean will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her kind spirit, warm smile, and gentle touch will be remembered by those who were fortunate enough to have known her. Rest in Peace, dear Jean. Your love and kindness will live on in the hearts of those you touched.
