Beloved mother and grandmother passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2022 at Auburn Fields in Auburn, Michigan. Age 90 years. Betty L. (Jacobs) Shreve was born in Saginaw, Michigan on June 15, 1932 to Frank and Bertha (Westphal) Jacobs. She was the 2nd oldest of 4 children: Jeanne, Ann and John were her sibs. She is survived by her sister, Ann Ruppel. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Karen Jacobs.
She married her best friend and the love of her life, Darwin Shreve, on August 20, 1954 at St. Andrew Church. He predeceased her May 26, 2019. Together they raised three girls: Katherine (Terry) Hugo of Auburn, MI.; Virginia (Tom) Darnell of Saginaw, MI; and Maureen Shreve of Auburn, MI. She has one grandson, Thomas (TJ) Darnell of Washington State. She thought the world of her sons-in-law.
Betty was a graduate of St. Andrew High School and earned her BA and Master’s degree from Michigan State University. She taught at St. Stephen for many years. She pioneered individualized reading instruction, developed a reading laboratory, and was awarded as an Outstanding Teacher in America. Her curiosity and love of learning led her to a new career in the emerging field of computers. She worked with computers at Helfrect Manufacturing, Braun, Kendrick and Finkbeiner and with Saginaw County Information Systems before retiring at age 70.
Betty had many hobbies and interests. At one time she was an expert calligrapher and published poet. She tutored many students during her summers. She sang in her church choir, served on Parish Council and enjoyed scripture study. After retirement, she volunteered at the Children’s Museum.
She and Dar loved their cottage on Horseshoe Lake and their home of 50 years in Saginaw. They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe.
Surviving are three daughters and their spouses, Katherine and Terry Hugo, Auburn; Virginia and Thomas Darnell, Saginaw; Maureen Shreve, Auburn; one grandson, Thomas (TJ) Darnell Jr., Washington; a sister Ann Ruppel; a sister-in-law Karen Jacobs; several nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Jeanne Marie Jacobs; and a brother, John Jacobs; her brother-in-law, Henry Ruppel; and her nephew, Matt Ruppel. She thought the world of her sons-in-laws.
Her family would like to extend a special thank you to her care team: Desiree, Val, Catina, Sara, Emily, Aly, Jenn, Marsha, Mari, Krystal, Lacy, Shana, Kendra, Tina, Renell, and Terry.
Funeral Liturgy will take place 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at St. Dominic Parish – St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2711 Mackinaw in Saginaw. Rev. Fr. Steven Gavit will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends may visit at the church where the family will be present on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. The family has requested no flowers. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Mustard Seed Foundation, St. Dominic Parish, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
