Obituary for Berneita Kay (Simmons) Whelton

Berneita Kay (Simmons) Whelton
Saginaw, Michigan

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt Berneita Kay (Simmons) Whelton, passed away peacefully in morning hours of Saturday, October 15, 2022 with her family by her side at her residence in Saginaw Township, Michigan. Age 80 years. Berneita was born on April 27, 1942 in Swan Creek Township, Michigan to the late George and Frances (Martin) Simmons. On August 8, 1959 Berneita married her loving husband, John C. “Jack” Whelton, and he preceded her in death on August 28, 2008. Berneita was a member of St. Dominic Parish- Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church; where she enjoyed helping with funeral luncheons. Berneita played numerous roles during her lifetime, but nothing was more important to her than caring for her family and home. When her children became more independent, she began working for Wiechmann’s Department Store; she forever cherished the lifelong friends made there. Berneita enjoyed volunteering at the front desk and gift shop of Covenant Healthcare whenever possible. In her later years she enjoyed going out to dinner with friends and testing her luck at the casino. With her many joys in life, nothing brought her more happiness than the time she was able to spend with her family. Berneita will be missed dearly by all, and her memories cherished forever.

Left to cherish her memories are her two daughters and one son, Deborah (Jesse Webb) Socier of Bay City, Kimberly (Mike Misze) Whelton of Midland, and Mike Whelton of Saginaw; five grandchildren, Jourdan and Nicholas Socier, Meleia, Michael, and Mitchell Whelton; great-grandchildren, Roman and Summer Haas; sisters-in-law, Jean Wade, Kaye Whelton, Shirley Simmons, and Dorothy Simmons; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Berneita is happily reunited with her husband, John C. “Jack” Whelton; parents, George and Frances (Martin) Simmons; brothers, Don, Ed, and Bob Simmons, sisters, Pat (Bill) McKinstry and Barb (Nathan) Reed; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack Wade, Patricia (Ray) Herbin, and Shirley (Mike) West.
