Obituary for Bernard (Bernie) Cooper

Bernard (Bernie) Cooper was born April 8, 1933 in Comfort, West Virginia to the late William J. and Ruby E. (Asbury) Cooper. Bernie married the former Ruby Lynn on New Year’s Eve in 1952 and celebrated 67 years of marriage until her death on October 8, 2020. He has now joined his bride, his pride and joy in life, in the eternal afterlife. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Bernie graduated from Morris Harvey College in Charleston, West Virginia, Eastern Michigan University and Central Michigan University. Bernie served as a teacher, coach and school administrator impacting thousands of students throughout Michigan and Wisconsin. He will be remembered by the way he always wore his hat, never correctly, for hours he spent outside either in the garden or picking up sticks, his daily night walks to the back of property to feed his “friends”.

Bernie is survived by six daughters: Colleen Weber, Kay (Mike) Kutsch, Karen (Mark) Wiant, Christina Cooper, Rhonda (Steven) Johnstone, and Penney (Joe) Schmuker; he is also survived by 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia Daniel; several nieces and nephews. Bernie was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jeremy Cooper and Travis Weber.

Bernie’s family extends their gratitude and appreciation Edgewood Assisted Living and its staff, especially Tara and Nikita, for their loving and compassionate care.

Honoring Mr. Cooper’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will take place. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Travis W. Weber Fund within the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation.
